So today we had to do this assignment in senior health that basically involves us interviewing a partner on some extremely general questions. These include: "what is your favorite memory of high school?" and "What do you plan to do after high school? and "What is your favorite color" (because why not ask for the bajillionth time).
So anyways, one question was "what is the thing you want to do most before you die?"
My answer: drive a McLaren F1
When we presented our interviews to the class, everyone was puzzled at that. They had no idea what is was. No freakin idea.
When I explained that it was a car, one guy stood up and said "wait, why not a Bugatti?"
I walk off to me seat face-palmed as the class starts singing "I woke up in a new Bugatti..."

I feel you man...

You missed a golden opportunity to educate your peers on why the McLaren F1 is one of, if not the greatest vehicle ever made by man. You could have explained the passion for engineering that went in to the design, and how the Bugatti Veyron, while amazing in it's own right, exists because of the bonkers design of the McLaren F1. You could have explained how Bugatti engineers are crazy because they were inspired by the McLaren F1.
Next time, do not face palm and judge your classmates; take the opportunity to educate and teach them.

The Bugatti engineers wish they could make something like the F1, but instead they made something heavier than an SUV.

Hahaha, my senior year in high school we had to write 5 things about where we'd be in 5 years. (this was back in 04 btw) Basically 5 goals.
Graduate from Michigan State University
Work in the American Automotive Industry
Own a Corvette
Get Married
Own a House
5 years later I completed all of them with a variation on number 3 being just a classic car- the Montego. So yes I did all these things by the time I was 23.
Everyone in my class wanted to know why I wanted an old car or to work in American Automotive. Remember American cars were still in the shitter in 04. Also, I lived in NJ where no one pays attention to American cars anyhow.

This is not exclusive to your generation and expecting anyone to know what a McLaren is that isn't into cars is a recipe for disappointment.

I wish I could've done that, but it's not like I was giving a speech
i know so much about the F1 ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY
I have a word doc on my computer with the current location of each chassis for christ sake
cars are truly an obsession

You're strangely friendly and helpful today. Must be the Ecto Cooler.

That's like me trying to explain to my friends why an Escort Cossie is my dream car.
They don't get it either.

I think 90% of the class' reaction to an attempt to educate them would have been even more cringe worthy than the original post. They're high schoolers for Christ's sake, they spend all of their time trying to avoid being educated.

do you, like me, have a man crush on Gordon Murray?

It's shitty that for the most part, many of the people closer to our age (I'm 20) who see cars as more than inconvenient appliances just see them as status symbols instead. All about the price and the badge. I've met many more people who "like cars" than who are car enthusiasts.

You should have just told him you were pretty sure that's a lambo dude

I seem to recall something similar to that. However, I wasn't so nice.
"what is your favorite memory of high school?"
Answer: "Leaving you assholes for greener pastures."

Teenagers, amirite? Gotta love kids these days, etc.
This is why I would go to the radical extreme of making all HS kids take an automotive basic maintenence class, where Top Gear is shown on TV's all over the bays. That'll educate them. At least a little. Maybe.

That was on my mind too

Sure you could have, have confidence in yourself as we do. You wouldn't have to give an entire speech but could have dropped some knowledge tidbits to whet their whistles a bit. Have confidence and you will go far; you clearly know your stuff, people will respect you for having the knowledge as they understand where you're coming from. Best of luck friend.

I do not have such a pessimistic view on youth. Naive and stupid? Sure. But the high school brain is malleable and with direction and leadership high schoolers will learn things even if they don't think they are. Besides, even if you taught only 10% of the class, that's 100% more than were taught by face palming and saying nothing.

I hate that fucking song. I can't believe nobody in a whole class recognized the name Mclaren.

this is what i hate.my roommate just went from an 11' Ram truck to a rav4, because the truck was to troublesome at school. He wouldn't listen to me when i said i could find him a better/higher quality of car that still fits what he was looking for. His response was "i dont care,it's got 4wd" /facepalm

I appreciate your faith in humanity. There would certainly be a sizable contingent completely oblivious because they are on their phones, but it's true that some people might actually learn something, and I can't say that's a bad thing.
